In addition to wearing feathery headgear at charity events, Benjamin Lap wants to be the Democrat nominee for the Broward County Commission, District 4. Lap said he was a “fresh face” who does not, “owe any favors to anybody. ” In an interview with the Sun-Sentinel, Lap admitted his advisers include Eric Johnson and Broward salami sandwich doyenne Judy Stern.
Eric Johnson is the chief of staff for Democrat Congressman Patrick Murphy. Johnson ran Murphy’s 2012 campaign against Congressman Allen West (R-Plantation). Why is a guy on the Federal payroll advising a Broward Commission candidate? Murphy is seen as one of the most vulnerable Democrats in the House and his chief of staff is messing around in local Broward politics?
As Murphy’s campaign manager, one would assume Johnson is familiar with Murphy campaign donor Dev Motwani. Last May, DAILY BROWARD revealed Mr. Motwani, a Fort Lauderdale Beach hotel developer, co-hosted March 2013 birthday bash/fundraiser for Murphy. At the time, campaign records showed Murphy received more than $5000 from Motwani. He gave another Democrat, Commissioner Kristin Jacobs, $1,500 for her US Congressional bid. He gave Jacobs’ opponent, Lois Frankel, another Democrat, $1,500 too. Motwani gave local Democrats Mike Satz and Jared Moskowitz $500 each.
Mr. Motwani is the campaign treasurer for Commission Chip LaMarca.
You know, the guy Benjamin Lap wants to unseat. Also, Lap wants to beat Ken Keechl for the Democrat nomination. Johnson used to work for Keechl.
Could Johnson be clueless about Motwani’s role in the LaMarca campaign? Hey, it’s Broward, anything is possible. But that would surely call into question his value as a campaign guru/chief of staff, right?
Then there is Judy.
You’ve got to give Lap credit. He’s one of the few politicians that actually admit to knowing Stern.
Sources say Judy’s fingerprints all over the Broward Commission races. She’s trying to get Joe Gibbons (D-Jacksonville) and Alexandra Davis (D-Holness) elected to the commission, while lobbying on behalf of the Florida Panthers.
Stern has ties to Chip LaMarca as well.
In 2010, just like Lap, Chip LaMarca admitted to having “conversations” with Judy Stern about his race against Keechl. In a 2009 Miami Herald story on Democrat State House candidate Barbra Stern, LaMarca said, “I happen to like Barbra a lot.”
Lap claims to be running against Commissioner Chip LaMarca (R-Panthers), but judging by his cast of advisers, it appears his true goal is eliminating the threat of Ken Keechl.
