Broward School Board candidate Lisa Lafferty Spince was behind the wheel of a Cherokee (GA) County school bus when a tractor-trailer slammed into it on a rural Georgia highway. Spince, the truck driver and six elementary school children were hospitalized. While the children had minor injuries, Spince and Reggie McKnight suffered serious injuries. The January 2011 crash came just months after Spince started working for Cherokee County. Previously, Spince had been a bus driver for Broward County for twenty-eight years.
McKnight was hailed as a hero for avoiding the body of the school bus by swerving to hit the engine. “I just was so thankful that the kids were alright,” McKnight said. “[Spince] was just sitting.” He said he “sacrificed myself and my life to basically save the kids.”
McKnight believed Spince was at total fault for the accident. “I’m upset that she wasn’t being safe,” he stated. Spince was charged with “failing to yield while turning left.” She entered a guilty plea and received a $150 fine.
In a tearful interview posted on YouTube, Spince recounted the day of the school bus accident. Spince said Cherokee bus drivers were allowed to get directions from children. When alerted she was headed in the wrong direction, she stopped the bus and proceeded to back up. Spince stopped when the bus made contact with a hanging tree branch. Before she was able to turn around, the bus was struck by McKnight’s truck. Spince said she suffered “bleeding on the brain” and severe burns.
Spince said she lives with the incident “every day” of her life.
SPINCE FILED COMPLAINT AGAINST ANN MURRAY OVER RACIAL SLUR
While Lisa Spince is challenging Laurie Rich Levinson for the District 6 seat, she is playing a role in the District 1 race as well. In that race, School Board Member Ann Murray is dealing with the fallout from an investigation into her use of an ugly racial epithet. In March 2011, RED BROWARD reported complaints were filed against Murray in 2007 when she was a District School Bus Supervisor. Multiple witnesses testified about Murray’s use of the racial slur. At the time, Bob Norman reported Lisa Spince was the person who filed the complaint as Murray:
