In a lengthy interview on The Daily Broward Super Power Hour, Broward School Board Member Abby Freedman struck back at her opponent for attacking her children in a campaign mailer. Robert Mayersohn, her opponent in the District 4 race, attacked Freedman for sending one of her three children to a private school. The mailer implied Freedman used her school board salary to finance the tuition at Pine Crest.
Mayersohn’s piece stated, “After she begun [sic] receiving her $40,000 school board salary, Abby took her son out of public school and sent him to a private school instead….” Mayersohn cites the Sun-Sentinel as the source of his information, but he does not included Freedman’s real rationale. In a September 30, 2013 interview with Scott Travis of the Sun-Sentinel, Freedman explains she did not want her son being subjected to a harsh end-of-course exam. “Last I checked, Einstein was able to discover the theory of relativity without an end-of-course exam,” Freedman said. “We have sent men to the moon and made incredible breakthroughs without end-of-course exams.”
Freedman gave the same explanation in her interview with Daily Broward. She said the Mayersohn mailer was disheartening and upsetting. Freedman said many voters were offended he would attack “her core, her child.” Freedman did not want an end-of-course exam negatively impacting his transcripts. She said Mayersohn manipulated the reasons for her son changing schools.
Freedman said her other child still attends a Broward public school.
Freedman responded to the mailer with one of her own. Labeling Robert “Bob” Mayersohn a “bully” for attacking her children, the Freedman mailer shows Mayersohn writing, “I am desperate and will bully and lie and say anything to get elected.”
Freedman also addressed the School Board’s attempt to change the culture of corruption, new school initiatives and what it is like to campaign while being a school board member and a mom. You can listen to the entire interview here or download the episode from the iTunes store.
