Karin Hoffman, the self-proclaimed leader of the tea party movement, has a long history of hypocritically attacking Republican leaders for accepting Federal money. Hoffiman is a candidate for chair of the Broward Republican Executive Committee (BREC). At last night’s final BREC debate, Hoffman made a vague reference to a 2011 interview she gave to the left-leaning POLITICO magazine. Hoffman failed to mention she viciously attacked Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus for doing something she just did herself-accept Federal tax dollars for her business.
Yesterday, REDBROWARD exposed how Hoffman’s family-owned business, Sonshine Educational Tours, Inc., accepted nearly $80,000 in Federal tax dollars in a contracts with the School Board of Broward County. In January 2011, as part of a new history program, the School Board of Broward County approved a week-long trip to Washington, D.C. by thirty elementary, middle and high school America history teachers. Sonshine agreed to “provide intensive training on the history of the United States.” The Board awarded the $68,354 contract states to Sonshine Educational Tours, Inc. In April 2011, the School Board of Broward County awarded the $16,520 contract to Hoffman’s Sonshine Educational Tours, Inc.for a two day trip by elementary school teachers to St. Augustine.
The funding came from a $1,000,000 “Teaching American History” grant from the Federal government.
In a January 2011, Hoffman attacked Priebus because The Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel reported Priebus’ firm , Michael Best & Friedrich, helped clients secure stimulus funding. Priebus denied having anything personally to do with that work.
“I never counseled a single person on the stimulus,” Priebus said. “It’s all garbage.”
Hoffman told Politico she was not buying Priebus’ excuses. “That violates everything that the tea party movement has been fighting against, so the fact that the RNC voted for him shows that the party still doesn’t get it at all,” said Hoffman.
Hoffman repeatedly boasts of her 2010 meeting with then RNC Chairman Michael Steele. She bragged about her meeting on CNN, MSNBC and again at last night’s debate. But she mocked in the meeting in the same Politico interview.
“Though Hoffman plans to reach out to Priebus to try to organize a similar meeting, she said the meeting with Steele amounted to ‘window dressing with absolutely no follow-through,’ and she did not sound optimistic about the possibility of more meaningful interactions between the tea party and Priebus.”
Just to be clear, Karin Hoffman attacked Reince Priebus because his law firm helped clients obtain Federal stimulus funding. According to Hoffman that’s bad even if Priebus was not personally involved with those clients. Yet, at the very same time, Hoffman’s Sonshine Educational Tours Inc, enters into a $68,000 contract with the School Board of Broward County which is funded with Federal dollars, and that’s ok?
Hey Karin, that sounds like the very definition of hypocrisy. Guess you still don’t get that at all.
