Last night’s monthly Broward Republican Execuitive Committee would have made Nancy Pelosi green with envy. Before the meeting even started, numerous committee members were unhappy with the way an election for party secretary was handled. Things got even worse after Chairman Tom Truex took the podium. In the end, Broward Commissioner Chip LaMarca and RNC Co-Chair Sharon Day got what they wanted, Carolyn Kennedy is the new BREC secretary. But the shenanigans used to secure the victory may have done irreparable damage to LaMarca, Day, and Truex.
Truex would not allow discussion on a motion to postpone the election until February. Truex rejected the notion that his endorsement of Kennedy would influence his handling of the election. After Kennedy was nominated, Truex ignored several other committee members standing to making nominations. Instead, he quickly recognized a motion to close the nominations. That’s a silly trick even Broward Democrat Chairman Mitch Ceasar would not dare pull.
The fix was in.
As Daily Broward reported, Truex, Day and LaMarca met on Friday at the Sheraton Suites. Last night, Ms. Day admitted she had to “talk [Kennedy] into running.” Truex said one of his top priorities was getting LaMarca re-elected. With a straight face, Truex said LaMarca acts as a “moderating” force on the County Commission by espousing conservative ideas. It’s clear Truex has not attended recent commission meetings.
Is voting to give $16,700 of taxpayers dollars to Dale Holness’ charity to celebrate Haitian Cultural Month an example of LaMarca waving the Republican flag? Carolyn Kennedy visited Holness three times in April 2013 in the hopes of getting that money to support her own group’s Haitian Cultural Month events. Kennedy was appointed to the County Diversity Committee by LaMarca. Shouldn’t someone ask if Chip discussed Haitian Cultural Month with Kennedy?
Truex kept saying the secretary election was the least important item on last night’s agenda. Really? If it was so unimportant, why the full court press for Kennedy? Why did he attend the secret meeting on Friday with Kennedy, LaMarca and Day? Who else was there? Who paid for the glossy mailers promoting Kennedy? How did Kennedy get the addresses of BREC members?
So much trouble, secrecy and expense for such an unimportant post, right Tom?
Of course this was all about keeping you from interfering with their plans. Kennedy is one of their crew. She will not cause trouble. When they say “jump” Carolyn will ask, “how high?”
Once gain, Sharon Day used her speaking time to attack grassroots activists. She doesn’t like it when people question her authority. She basically told members to “go away” if they won’t fall into lock step.
Sadly, Truex delivered the same “go away” message to his members. Why did Truex fall under the spell of the establishment crew?
They don’t want anyone rocking the boat. The call for “unity” is always code for “shut up and go away.”
Judging from the reactions last night, many of you are ready to go away. Several longtime members talked about never coming back. These members are not the “tea party types” that Day rails against. They used to support LaMarca and Day. They weren’t troublemakers; They are the members who helped decorate tables at Lincoln day, stuffed envelopes for candidates, made phone calls and presided over local clubs.
Don’t give them what they want.
Turn last night’s anger and embarrassment into motivation and inspiration. Day, Truex and LaMarca complain because you are making a difference. You’re beginning to realize the real problems in our party. You’re seeing things clearly now.
It’s always about them. Truex said he gets headaches from the complaints. Day hates people calling her out. LaMarca has alienated the Republican base to such a degree he needs the BREC board to force support for his foundering campaign.
Last night, they were exposed by their words and actions. They couldn’t risk a fair election for secretary. They’re desperate to squash free speech. They want to name “precinct captains” to circumvent committeemen and women.
Do not give them what they want. They want us to go away. We’re too much trouble.
These Charlie Crist Republicans look down their nose at you. Like any other snob or bully, they hate it when the little guy stands up to them.
It reminds me of the time Ronald Reagan stood up to the Republican establishment by paying for a debate which included all GOP candidates:
Stand up to them. You’re winning. Your numbers are growing. Others are beginning to listen to you.
Last night was another battle in a long war worth fighting.
