The lawyer representing Broward County Court candidate Jonathan Kasen at local political events was reprimanded by the Florida Bar for an odd romantic relationship with a jailed client. Nirav Jamindar admitted to a “mutual relationship” with his jailed client Ashley Wight. While he admitted to sending letters to Wight under an assumed name, Jamindar denied he used his access to the jail for “non-legal visits” with Wright.
When first confronted with the allegations, Jamindar admitted he lied to his boss at the Lee County Public Defender’s Office. Jamindar was charged with a violation of Bar rules governing conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit or misrepresentation. The Naples News reported Jamindar consented to a reprimand and entered a conditional guilty plea.
A Lee County jail deputy recognized Jamindar’s photo on a “gushy romantic” postcard delivered to Wight. “Jamindar’s barely legible writing, scrawled in miniature on the postcard, says he can’t wait for Wight to be released so they could live together. He couldn’t wait to cuddle her, wake up to her ‘sparkling face’ and make her the ‘happiest woman on earth.’ He hoped she’d text him ‘dirty messages so I laugh in the middle of court (ha, ha, ha).’ “ Jamindar had deposited $400 dollars in Wight’s jailhouse bank account.
According to the “FloriDUH” section of the Sun-Sentinel, Wight denied the feelings were mutual. She asked jail guards to stop Namindar from visiting her. “He had a crush on me,” Wight said. “There was no romance whatsoever. She said his feelings toward her were not reciprocated at all and she wasn’t ‘the only inmate he had a crush on.'” Wight said Namindar “told her he was a virgin — and she let him know that was inappropriate.”
Last month, Namindar appeared as Kasen’s surrogate at a political forum in Lauderdale Lakes. Several sources snapped photographs of Namindar wearing a Kasen name badge. Political insiders say Kasen is supported by Judge Ari Porth, a former Democrat legislator.
Kasen is no stranger to public controversy. He appeared on national news programs while he represented Casey Anthony of Orlando. Kasen is running against Judge Ian Richards and attorney Claudia Robinson.
