Can you still be called “Republican” law firm if you contribute heavily to Broward Democrats and prosper off taxpaying funding of Obamacare? The February 23, 2014 Broward Republican Executive Committee meeting featured a speech by Ed Pozzuoli, an attorney with Tripp Scott P.A. Chairman Tom Truex said it was an honor to introduce Pozzuoli, who was BREC chairman from 1996 to 2000. Truex said, “Ed Pozzuoli and his firm are some of the biggest friends that [BREC] has. I have questions…or need some guidance in the direction BREC is headed, Ed Pozzuoli is really a go-to guy.”
Pozzuoli told BREC members that Truex asked him to speak about unity. He said he had been around long enough to know that debate inside BREC and other Republican circles was a “good thing.” But Pozzuoli stated this internal debate was a waste of time and energy that should be devoted to stopping Obamacare and Democrat’s “European Socialist” agenda.
Pozzuoli said, “Democrats move from a liberal agenda to this more socialist agenda and frankly they have no appreciation for American traditions or history. Because who would come up with Obamacare and name it the Affordable Care Act.” He said polling shows Obamacare “moves the needle” in political races across Florida. Amazed Charlie Crist had embraced Obamacare, Pozzuoli said we should “hang him by the neck with it.”
Sounds like basic Republican talking points, right? Just wait, this is Broward county after all.
One day later, Commissioner Chip LaMarca and the rest of the Broward County Commission voted to give local hospitals $400,000 worth of taxpayer dollars to sign up people for Obamacare. According to this Media Trackers story, the Commission voted to increase payments to the North Broward and South Broward Hospital Districts to identify “primary care patients eligible for private insurance through the Federal Health Insurance Marketplace and assisting them in obtaining it.”
There was no public discussion. LaMarca said nothing to oppose it. He voted for it. Why?
Again from the Media Trackers story, “His decision may be explained by his ties to the North Broward Health District. David Di Pietro, the chairman of Broward Health, is one of LaMarca’s closest political advisors. As Media Trackers Florida previously reported, Di Pietro represents LaMarca in his ongoing foreclosure case.”
But wait, it gets better.
Guess who is the lobbyist for the North Broward Hospital District? Yep, you guessed it, BREC “Go-To Guy,” Ed Pozzuoli of Tripp Scott.
It’s no surprise that Pozzuoli, Di Pietro, and Tripp Scott have made large contributions to LaMarca’s current re-election campaign.
Want to know who else got contributions from Pozzuoli and Tripp Scott?
In the 2014 election cycle, Tripp Scott gave $1000 to Democrat State House candidates Bobby Dubose and Evan Jenne. Tripp Scott gave $500 to Democrat State Rep. Joe Gibbons for his Broward County Commission race. Gibbons has been the subject of numerous investigations into whether he actually lives in Broward.
Tripp Scott gave more than $2,000 to Broward Mayor Barbara Sharief, the Democrat who wants to give the Florida Panthers more taxpayer dollars without guarantees of profit sharing. Ed Pozzuoli gave Sharief $500 too.
On October 24, 2012, just days before the election, Tripp Scott gave $500 to Commissioner Stacy Ritter. The Parkland Democrat was running against Robert Sutton, a Republican and member of BREC. Sutton received no money from Pozzuoli or Tripp Scott.
In 2010, Tripp Scott gave $500 to Democrats Evan Jenne and Franklin Sands. In 2010, the firm gave $500 to Jenne, Sen Chris Smith, and Broward State Attorney Mike Satz.
And in 2004, Pozzuoli and Tripp Scott gave maximum contributions to the disgraced Broward Commissioner Josephus Eggelletion. Several years later, Eggelletion, a Democrat, would spent time in Florida State prison on corruption charges.
And don’t forget, Tripp Scott gets $40,000 worth of taxpayer dollars to lobby before the State Legislature on behalf of the Broward County Commission.
So what, you say? This is what lobbyists are supposed to do, you say?
But, if you’re going to play the lobbyist role, don’t come running to us to pontificate about “unity.” Don’t implore us to fight Obamacare when less than 24 hours later, your clients benefit from taxpayers dollars to promote Obamacare.
These are the same folks that meddle in BREC elections. Remember how Karen Harrington outed Pozzuoli and LaMarca as “The Chairmen” who begged her to challenge Richard DeNapoli?
These are the same folks from Charter Schools USA who sabotaged a BREC motion to oppose Common Core with silly parliamentarian games.
These are the same folks that played games to force Carolyn Kennedy down our throats as the new BREC secretary before we discovered her role in Democrat campaigns.
Now, this week we learned LaMarca and Kennedy teamed up with Dale Holness to recruit a Democrat County Commission candidate.
We deserve better leaders.
Isn’t it time for Tom Truex and Broward Republicans to stop getting guidance from Ed Pozzuoli and Tripp Scott?
