Sheriff Scott Israel received a big (literally) endorsement on Friday. Shaquille “Shaq” O’Neal placed his support squarely behind the Broward County Sheriff via video recording posted on YouTube. He has also come on board as the honorary co-chair of Israel’s re-election campaign.
Not content to rest on his impressive 19 season NBA accomplishments, O’Neal has earned his doctorate in education from Barry University in Miami, as well as taking an active interest in the field of Law Enforcement by becoming a reserve officer in several police forces – most recently that of the Doral police force in September of 2014.
One of the pervading aspects of Shaq’s (or more precisely Dr. O’Neal’s) career has been his commitment to encouraging leadership, and achievement in local communities, especially youths. His endorsement and participation is an impressive addition to Sheriff Israel’s re-election efforts.
Regardless of partisan politics, it’s difficult to dispute Sheriff Israel’s commitment to the youths of Broward County through his active use of the Civil Citation program, and despite potential disagreements about decisions Israel has made during his tenure, the Sheriff has consistently been surprisingly straightforward in his explanations of those decisions- a tactic not generally used by politicians of ANY party in an arena where denial and obfuscation is the norm.
The endorsement by Dr. Shaquille O’Neal of Scott Israel for re-election probably will not decide the Sheriff’s election, but frankly, it is kind of cool, and given the genuine likeability of the former NBA Star, an endorsement by Shaq certainly can’t hurt Israel’s re-election efforts.
