Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel started fundraising for the next election on Wednesday night with a well-attended kickoff held at the Police Benevolent Association. It was an event attended by supporters, candidates, potential candidates, and elected officials, and was full of great conversations and laughter.
Though no challenger has yet appeared to challenge Israel, the Sheriff gives no sign of expecting an easy election season. According to an unnamed advisor, and confirmed by staff, “Sheriff Israel plans to raise $2 million between his campaign and ECO,” adding that Israel is,”…off to a strong start with roughly a quarter-million raised already.”
Israel’s service as sheriff thus far has been remarkably free of incidents. which in Broward County is a significant accomplishment alone, but a common sentiment regarding the Sheriff is that people like him because he is genuine. “He’s a down to earth guy, you know?” said one supporter “He’s a solid cop who doesn’t let the title go to his head.”
It’s likely that Israel and campaign staff will put the same effort into this campaign as that which brought him the win in the last election… a prospect which will undoubtedly give any prospective challenger a moment of pause.
