The United States of America has no interest in Syria except: (1) to stop something akin to genocide, (2) stop the further destabilization of a region we are unfortunately wedded to at the moment, and (3) avoid having the United States of America lose face in the Arab world. We lack all but a symbolic objective.
We stand a great chance of putting American lives at risk for nothing because the Obama Administration has taken overwhelming use of force off the table. The United States stands a great chance of invigorating radical Islamists to do more of what they love to do. We have no exit strategy mainly because we had no entrance strategy in the first place. British Prime Minster David Cameron’s loss in Parliament shows the United States does not have broad international support for any action in Syria. Unfortunately, President Barack Obama is taking the short view of this quagmire and who wants another?
I posed the question, “What would Colin Powell do?” Obviously, I can’t answer that, short of confidence he would say don’t get yourself in this position in the first place. Nevertheless, this … now. We all must decide!
And then again, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” – Edmund Burke.
