For just a moment, let’s take a look at a few political titles that use the phrase “The People’s…” to see what they have in common:
The People’s Unity Party
The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea
The People’s Historian (Howard Zinn)
Hmmm… Nothing yet? Try these:
The People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen
The People’s Community
The People’s National Party
Still stuck? Well, perhaps THIS will help you:
The People’s Republic of China
Ding, ding, ding!… you guessed it…
They are all Communist or Socialist organizations or persons.
In saying that, I am NOT suggesting that Charlie Crist is a Communist or Socialist, at least not that I know of. Given his stalwart adherence to a single politically ideology, such a suggestion would be ludicrous – Besides, Steve Geller attested that Charlie “was never REALLY a Republican”, and Sharon Day stated clearly that when she supported him “He was a Jeb Bush – RONALD REAGAN Republican”. Given such ringing endorsements from such party gurus (from BOTH parties, no less), there couldn’t be any possible way that Charlie would be pulling the wool over anyone’s eyes.
No, what I am suggesting is that Crist’s campaign marketing staff believes Floridians to be mindless illiterates who are incapable of working their way past the cover of a history book. They believe that Florida Democrats won’t remember that Charlie was a Republican. They believe that Republicans won’t realize that Charlie is a Democrat, or that some will vote for him anyway (They might not be wrong about that second part…). They believe that the voters of both parties will buy into the spin and marketing that they spew out, rather than read, and think, and research for themselves.
Let’s take another look at an interesting “The People’s” fact: It’s never a title actually given by the people themselves. If the person, place, thing or idea were really chosen by the people, wouldn’t we call it “Ours”?
Instead, it’s chosen by others, who believe themselves to be better, smarter, more experienced, or more capable than everyone else. Those who chose the title of “The People’s” for everyone else see themselves as the elite, and the rest of us as just the masses of peasants desperately in need of someone to tell us how to think, what to believe, or how high a station we are allowed to achieve… but fortunately, that’s not the way that the United States works.
In the end, the residents of Florida will vote for whoever they will, and our publications will cover the Governor’s race with clear and open eyes. My hope is that each voter will take the time to do the research for themselves, and to listen carefully and critically to each of the candidates. It is a critical time for both Florida and the United States, and we can’t afford to let others decide what is best for us. Now more than ever, it’s important to not be swayed by spin, clever marketing, who looks best, or who makes the most empty promises.
We have to look at the records, past decisions, promises kept, and promises broken. When we’ve looked at all these thing, then we will decide who is “Our Governor”. At least, that’s the way that I see it. Hopefully, you do too.
