Former Chairman Tom Truex has resigned from the Broward Republican Executive Committee (BREC). Truex, leader of the Broward GOP since 2013, recently decided not to seek re-election as party chairman. Earlier this month, Christine Butler won a landslide election to become the new BREC chair. Truex’s resignation comes amid growing calls for a full investigation into party finances especially the circumstances surrounding the Lincoln Day fundraiser.
Truex and former BREC treasurer Mark McCarthy had promised BREC members that no party funds would be used to bring Charles Krauthammer to speak at the Lincoln Day dinner. As REDBROWARD reported at the time, Krauthammer’s speaking fees and travel arrangements would total more than $60,000. Such high overhead, plus normal costs for food and drinks, would almost guarantee the party fundraiser would not make a profit.
In order to defray the Krauthammer fees, Truex and McCarthy said BREC member Larry Woods would host a $2,500 per person private cocktail party at his waterfront condo. McCarthy was so sure the Woods party would raise the needed funds, he announced he would cover the first $10,000 of any shortfall.
Financial reports showed BREC paid Krauthammer. McCarthy never gave $10,000 to the party. As members started to ask questions, Truex canceled BREC meetings in October and November.
Now, Truex may never show up to face the music. Instead of answering questions, he ran away. He sent this short email:
BREC,I resign as committeeman of Precinct T003.
